My postdoctoral research tracks the evolution of the role of the European Commission in the field of security and defence not only in shedding light on its position but also on its relations with other actors, state and non-state, involved in European Union security governance. My presentation will first introduce and contextualize my research, explaining how I came to consider the European Commission as a security actor. I will present my PhD thesis on the emergence of a European field of security and defence which moves the emphasis from the traditional intergovernmental approach of European security integration to a system where a number of actors interacts with several instruments. Then, I will expose my theoretical framework analysis which combines the International political sociology and security governance approaches, their tools and methods. Finally, I will outline the first results of my research and the next step.
